Kisawa Sanctuary and Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies are excited to represent Mozambique and the Western Indian Ocean at the Blue Economy Summit, held in Milan on June 4.
Presented by One Ocean Foundation, as part of Ocean Week 2024 – the event will connect international leaders from the worlds of science, institutions, entrepreneurship and finance to discuss the current status of the ocean and the urgent need to build a Blue Economy.
“The Summit aims to spur action in advancing the blue economy and promoting partnerships in order to inspire innovative collaborations and strategies and to generate concrete solutions on the journey towards a healthier ocean“.
In 2024, the annual Blue Economy Summit will focus on:
• The need to create a solid Blue Capital Market
• The emerging tech-based innovations for the ocean
• The issue of biodiversity loss
• The need for a more resilient water system
• The new blue economy opportunities
Kisawa & BCSS founder, Nina Flohr will appear on the “Innovation panel”, looking at future solutions in protecting the ocean and the ways in which BCSS has turned theory into practice, on Benguerra Island, Mozambique.

Dr Mario Lebrato will join a panel discussing the role of whales in protecting biodiversity, joining thought leaders, researchers and whale experts from across the globe. Dr Lebrato will draw on his experiences monitoring and observing humpback whales in the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park over the last 8 years.

The Blue Economy Summit is open to the public and will be streamed as part of the United Nation’s commitment to Ocean Week.
