In late October, photographer Malick Bodian and Creative Director, Ib Kamara visited Kisawa on a special assignment for esteemed US lifestyle publication, WSJ. Magazine.
Malick and Ib’s vision was to utilise “everything from the island”, weaving the craft of Benguerra Island into a fashion editorial for the title’s annual Holiday Issue. To mix designer pieces with handmade architectural shapes and structures, utilising local woven art, flora and fabrics.
Our Kisawis worked with their creative team, scouring the Vilanculos markets to handpick items, across baskets, trays and lampshades woven by Anastancio Orlando Zualo and Daniel Chivale. Plus a variety of traditional capulanas, and even our Kisawa guest hats, woven by Baptista Tangune.
Starring models Achol Ayor and Micklate Macobola (from Mozambique), in various locations throughout the multiple ecosystems of Kisawa Sanctuary’s home – the joy was an invitation for the Kisawa team to take part, seeing Alex from the leisure team, and our in-house tailor, Julião appearing in front of the lens.
The result is a thoroughly modern and contemporary glimpse of coastal Mozambique – showcasing just some of the environmental awe we feel and see, every day at Kisawa. With our very own Kisawi Alex standing on the Red Dune, in a red suit, decked in local baskets and coastal wildflowers, chosen for the WSJ mag’s December cover.
A giant thank you to the creative talent and wonderful people that are Malick, Ib, Sam, Abena (and Chloe). Plus to Willow, Lane & Rhianna for having the vision to make this magic happen. And, of course our team, who continue to rise to every challenge and grow in confidence and creativity each day. Thank you Prosper, Pedro, Querino – and our stars, Alex and Julião.
